FROM THE AIRPORT

Taxi:  Taxis from U-Tapao airport to Pattaya Beach costs anywhere between 500 to 1,000 baht. Cab drivers waiting outside the arrival hall will quote you their prices based on your destination. Shop around to compare cost and go with the one you’re most comfortable with. Haggling skills are a must here.

Ruen Thai Restaurant

Purveyors of great staple Thai dishes, such as tom yum and exploding catfish salad, Ruen Thai is open from 11am daily. Dishes start from 50 baht.

Mid-range magic

Offering Thai, Chinese, European and seafood dishes, the restaurant’s speciality is local cuisine. Steamed Sea Bass with Lime Juice and Deep-Fried Squid with Garlic are worth trying. Thai shows featuring traditional music and dance run from 7pm to 11.30pm daily.

The Rice Mill
Choose from a wide range of Cantonese dishes, interspersed with the northern and Szechuan specialities, at the Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa’s Chinese restaurant. The Rice Mill also has excellent yum cha (also known as dim sum, a tapas-style meal usually including dumplings).

Naklua market –Thailand is home to some of the most dynamic markets in Asia. A trip to Naklua market in North Pattaya will give you a taste of local life and offers a stunning array of seafood and other produce from the area. It’s best to beat the heat and get there around 8am. Taxis cost about 100 baht from central Pattaya.

DAY TRIPPING

Chanthaburi –Seized by French colonial forces in 1893 after the Paknam crisis, the town was returned to Thailand in 1905. Today, Chanthaburi is famous for fruit, sapphire mines, its Catholic cathedral, Buddhist temples and an abundance of great seafood restaurants on pristine beaches.

IN THE KNOW

Take a bus and ferry to get a glimpse of the sparkling jade waters of Koh Samet. Paradee (www.paradeeresort.com) is the island’s only fi ve-star resort and a stay in the lovely Moroccan-inspired villas here is pure heaven.
