FROM THE AIRPORT

Taxi:  Cabs are colour-coded: red ones for Central and Kowloon, green for the New Territories and blue for Lantau Island. The trip to Central takes about 45 minutes and costs HK$350 (US$45).

Subway:  The Airport Express takes 24 minutes to the Central district. Trains run from 5.50am until 12.48am. www.mtr.com.hk

HOT SPOTS

Lantau Island –Hong Kong’s largest island has more than enough diversions for a whole day. Head to Po Lin Monastry for a culture fix – a vegetarian lunch is served daily. Beaches include the very long Cheung Sha bay.

Smart cards –Octopus smart cards are used for public transport and payment at many supermarkets, convenience stores, fast-food outlets, chemists and clothing stores.

Chi Lin Nunnery –Wander among 18 prayer halls nestled amidst the beautifully landscaped gardens of this sprawling Buddhist retreat.
