Vietnam : Ho Chi Minh - June 2008

FROM THE AIRPORT

Taxi:  There is always a fleet of taxis outside the arrivals terminal waiting to pick up passengers from incoming flights. Ho Chi Minh City Centre is approximately 30 minutes from Tan Son Nhat airport and should cost about $4-5 or VND60,000 by meter.

TABLE TALK

Cheap chic

Nam Giao
(135/16 Le Thanh Ton, District 1. Tel. (0)8 825-0261)
Tuck into great Hue-style dishes here – locals love their noodle soup, ban beo rice cakes and rice noodles with grilled pork.

Mid-range magic

Xu Cafe Bar
(71-75 Hai Ba Trung, District 1. Tel. (0)8 824-8468)
A younger, hipper accompaniment to the more sophisticated restaurant upstairs. Try their delicious pizzas.

AFTER DARK

Cocktail hour

Pachara
(97 Hai Ba Trung, District 1,. Tel. (0)8 825-6024)
Whether you choose the bar or the two floors upstairs or the rooft op space, this restaurant serves tapas, sangria and Spanish wines.

BODY & SOUL

Q Spa & Salon
(31 Ly Tu Trong, District 1. Tel. (0)8 905-4609)
This three-year-old spa may be small, but it is known for reliable facials and massages.

HOT SPOTS

The Courtyard –The attractions on 74 Hai Ba Trung Street offer different temptations. The Refinery is a bistro with great fare; wine importers Vino has a bottle for every taste; Cafe Evita has great pizzas; and head upstairs to Vasco’s to dance it all off .

INSIDER TIPS

Bia Hoi –Homemade beer is served at roadside stalls everywhere in the city. The brews are cheap as chips and utterly refreshing.

DAY TRIPPING

Hash House Harriers –They may call themselves drinkers with a running problem, but this is one of the best ways to get out of town for some exercise and a chance to see the countryside at the same time. Tel (0)90 337-4742, www.saigonh3.com

IN THE KNOW

Filled with all sorts of coffee beans, Coffee Chateau (68 Mac Thi Buoi, District 1) is a quaint hole-in-the-wall coffee haven amidst the busy tourist quarters.
