Japan : Hiroshima - July 2008
Country Code: Dial +81 for Japan

FROM THE AIRPORT

Taxi:  The lack of a direct rail link and the costly fare for long-distance taxis make this by far the best way to get between Hiroshima International Airport and the city. The journey takes about 50 minutes and the buses run regularly to and from either Hiroshima Station (North Shinkansen Exit side) or Hiroshima Bus Centre (in the city centre, near Peace Memorial Park). Tickets are 1,300 yen each for a one-way trip. Return tickets valid for seven days are 2,360 yen. www.hij.airport.jp

INSIDER TIPS

Ready for rain –Don’t let a little rain stop play – grab a brolly and head to Shukkeien Garden or Mitaki Temple.

DAY TRIPPING

Sandankyo Gorge –The gorgeous scenery makes the two-hour bus ride to the gorge worth it. You’ll need a full day to see all three waterfalls. Aft erwards, reward yourself with a soak in the relaxing onsen (natural hot springs) at the Sandankyo Hotel.

IN THE KNOW

At this time of year, a great way to get around town is by bike. If the handful of bikes near Hiroshima Station are gone, try the Freebird BMX shop in Tokaichi, tel (0)82 295-3906
