HOT SPOTS

Anusarn Market –Located on central Chang Klan Road, this busy food market is a sophisticated version of the nearby Kalare Market. Look for excellent fresh seafood fl own in daily from the coast, as well as Th ai, Chinese and Indian cuisine.

INSIDER TIPS

Book out –In the last 15 years, Chiang Mai has developed into the best centre for second-hand Western language books in South-East Asia. There are a dozen second-hand bookshops packed with a surprisingly wide selection of quality literature. Start at Backstreet Books and Gecko Books on Chang Moi Gao Street.

DAY TRIPPING

The Peak –Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest mountain at 2,565m, is just 88km south of Chiang Mai, and makes a great day trip by taxi or rental car. Located at the centre of Doi Inthanon National Park, it is home to several local hill tribe villages, almost 400 bird species, and several spectacular waterfalls. Cool in summer, it is the ideal spot for a picnic lunch.

IN THE KNOW

Northern Thais, who call themselves Khon Meuang or “People of the Principalities”, speak a language as distinct from central Th ai as Portuguese is from Spanish. They consider themselves a diff erent (though closely related) people to the Central Thais of Bangkok, and will casually ask a new acquaintance, “Are you Thai or Meuang”, switching between languages according to the reply.
