EXTRA MILE

Peace and Kwai-Et

It’s oh-so-still on the River Kwai

The old saying “getting there is half the fun” is particularly pertinent to River Kwai Jungle Rafts, because the only way of getting there is via an exhilarating long-tail boat ride. The floating hotel comprises a series of timber rafts lashed together on a bend of the Khwae Noi river. Each room has its own front and back veranda, equipped with the most essential jungle facility of all – the hammock.

Life is gentle here. The air is soft, the river murmurs beneath the timber floorboards, and nature, raw and beautiful, dominates. Without electricity, the only light at night escapes from the amber glow of hurricane lanterns.

Inside the huts, it feels like you’re drifting slowly downstream. There’s nothing like falling asleep with the river gurgling beneath the floorboards or being woken in the morning by the sound of elephants bathing outside. Jump off the deck for a swim, or float Mowgli-style along the river.

The forested surrounds offer lots of outdoor activities. Take a walk to the Mon village nearby, go canoeing, trekking, mountain biking, explore nearby caves and waterfalls. And to unwind? Retire to either of the floatel’s two buoyant bars or watch a traditional Mon orchestra and dance performance after dinner. – Kerry van der Jagt 190km from Bangkok by road and another 20 minutes by boat.
