cling on in yangshuo, the climbing capital of china

CLIFFHANGER

If you want to go up in the world, head for China’s hippy hang-out turned adventure capital – Yangshuo, a town just one hour from Guilin. The sheer rock faces of its iconic limestone karst mountains have made this one of Asia’s top climbing destinations and a mecca for cliffh

angers from all over the world. Th e first bolted route was created on Yangshuo’s famous Moon Hill nearly 20 years ago. Since then, hundreds more have been added on other peaks and are graded from very difficult to extreme. There’s no chance climbers will run out of potential new routes for a while yet: there are some 70,000 karst peaks in Yangshuo County, including this one near Silver Cave. Consider Yangshuo climbing clubs KarstClimber (www.karstclimber.com) and Chinaclimb (www.chinaclimb.com), the latter of which has an indoor climbing wall at its headquarters. Climbing excursions can last a few hours, or up to 10 days – choose your poison. – Text and image by Peter Ellegard
