GRAND OPENING OF NEW SAMUI AIRPORT TERMINAL AND SAMUI PARK AVENUE

Samui Airport has officially announced the grand opening of its new passenger terminals and Samui Park Avenue, the open-air shopping street. Bangkok Airways’ CEO, Dr Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth (opposite page, middle), presided over this grand occasion among honourable guests, celebrities and members of the press.

Nestled within the airport compound, construction on the new terminals and Samui Park Avenue commenced in 2005 on a 490-rai plot. Upon completion, the new terminal opened for domestic flights on 27 May, 2007. Later, the next phase for international flights was launched on 31 August, 2007.

This airport development project, an investment of 500 million baht, has a total passenger area of 7,300 square metres and is four times more spacious than the previous terminal. It can accommodate approximately 16,000 passengers per day, or six million passengers per year. The new facility consists of six buildings which are divided into four domestic terminals and two international terminals.

The architecture of the new terminals retains an environmentally friendly concept as it is open-air, does not require air-conditioning and blends seamlessly with the island’s surroundings. Moreover, a courtesy corner at all departure gates provides refreshments, snacks and free internet access to all passengers.

Adjacent to the new terminals is Samui Park Avenue, the island’s latest shopping venue, spread over an area of four rai (6,400 square metres). Open daily from 7am to 10pm, Park Avenue is now one of the hippest hang-outs on the island. It is lined with well-known shops, spas and restaurants, such as Bookazine, Jim Thompson, Thai Brasserie by Blue Elephant, Whittard of Chelsea, Harnn & Thann, The Taste by ML Nandhika, Pizza Paradiso, Swensens and a cuisine garden – making it the place for discerning dining, a quick massage and even handy pharmacy items.
