DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Architectural icons are celebrated for their grandeur, scale or beauty. Yet, this rococo dame in Phnom Penh has been known all these years as merely “the rundown colonial building opposite the National Museum”. Standing across the field from the National Museum, her yellow paint has long faded and her insides are in a tragic state of disrepair, but to the delight of many Phnom Penhois, the stylish folks at the FCC (tel +855 (0)23 992284, www.fcccambodia.com) have acquired the mansion and will be restoring 32 Sothearos Boulevard into a 24-room boutique hotel, complete with pool and French bistro.

If the group’s list of credentials (ultra-swish hotels and restaurants in Yangon, Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh) are anything to go by, this old lady is about to get a makeover like no other.

Go by the site now and plan to come back later – so you can enjoy the before and after.
