WELL DRESSED

At just 25, Vietnamese designer Duc Duy has clothed the country’s top celebrities, designed costumes for local films, started his own line of clothing, and opened the Duc Duy boutique (140/3 Vo Th i Sau Street, District 3, tel +84 (0)8 820-3071). Here, the up-and-comer of Ho Chi Minh’s catwalks talks about fabric shopping and the local fashion scene.

Describe Vietnamese fashion.
It’s very exciting right now, as the industry is starting to establish itself and develop its own identity. Our fashion is youthful and aggressive, casual and sophisticated, and incorporates global trends with the Vietnamese traditional dress, the ao dai.

What do you most enjoy designing?
Beautiful evening and cocktail dresses. Given the right design, a dress can give any woman an instant surge of glamour. I like to use smooth, supple and luxurious fabrics such as silk, chiffon and satin in my creations.

Where do you go to buy fabric in Ho Chi Minh?
Thai Tuan on Hai Ba Trung street, or central Ben Th anh market for stalls selling material and ao dai sets.

What materials make the perfect ao dai?
Choose fabric that behaves the way you need it to – for elegant ao dai, you need smooth and supple cloth that is comfortable to wear all day long. The best thing to do is to take your tailor shopping with you – they understand the texture of different fabrics and can offer invaluable assistance in selecting the right one for your needs.

GOOD GOD

Goods of Desire – better known as G.O.D. – is a popular homeware store that incorporates distinctly Hong Kong elements into its contemporary, quirky designs with a splash of humour.

Find everything from notebooks that resemble Colonial British passports, to bed linen sets emblazoned with images of local tenement buildings.

The shop has a knack for bilingual puns – G.O.D. is a play on the Cantonese phrase, chee hoe di, which translates to “living well”.

Recently, casual fashion lines are also becoming popular. T-shirts have quirky phrases printed on them – a great example of Hong Kong’s offb eat sense of humour. Outlets in Causeway Bay, Tsimshatsui and Central, tel +852 2805-1876, www.god.com.hk
