Cool Hotels Ecological chose Krabi’s Costa Lanta (tel +66 (0)2 662-3550, www.costalanta.com) as a stylish, earth-conscious hotel for its cleverly cooled concrete rooms which blend well into the Koh Lanta Yai seaside, and require no air-conditioning. The glossy hardcover in the Cool Hotels series (available at leading bookstores and at www.teneues.de) scoured the globe for “hotels which combine innovation in design, and concern for the environment”. Give Lao children the gift of reading with Big Brother Mouse. This community project aims to teach young Lao kids to read and also publishes books in the Lao language – a rarity in the country.
In this unique excursion organised with Viengchampa Tours (tel +856 (0)21 262042, www.viengchampatour.com), you are taken to the Big Brother Mouse bookstore to select your favourite children’s book.
From there, you are brought to Ban Khia Luang village, 40 minutes away, to personally present your book to a special (and lucky) child.
BRIGHT SPARK
Look out for litroenergy (www.litroenergy.com), an invention that is sure to change the way we use power. The material, which was entered into NASA’s Create the Future contest, is as bright as a 40-watt bulb and emits light for 12 years without the need for recharging, electricity or even sunlight!
Says creator Steve Stark: “The world uses just over 20% of all electricity generated to produce light. Our new light source will greatly reduce our need to flip the switch.”
You’ll start to see it first in safety equipment, sporting and protective gear, but Stark hopes litroenergy will one day be used in agriculture.
“Plants do not sleep, so they will use as much light as you can give them to grow,” he explains. “This is a very exciting area of development for increasing the ability to feed the ever growing population on our planet.”
